Even though Nelson Cruz is no longer with the Minnesota Twins, it is hard to deny the love he and the franchise have for one another. Cruz was considered a key part of the lineup and locker room, a leader whose presence helped make the team that much more like family. He was also a key part in helping the younger players learn the ropes, what it took to be a major leaguer.

Given that bond, it is not a surprise that he is still keeping tabs on the Twins. In fact, he went out of his way to meet Joe Ryan, one of the players that Minnesota received in exchange for his services.

Ryan made his major league debut on Wednesday, taking the loss against the Cubs. He actually pitched well, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk, striking out five. That performance gave the Twins a lot of hope for his future, and the future of their pitching staff.

Meanwhile, Cruz has not exactly been what the Rays had hoped for. While he has eight homers and six doubles in his 143 plate appearances, his 96 OPS+ is somewhat disappointing. However, as he had spent the previous two and a half years in Minnesota, and had found a place he considered home, it is not surprising that he has had some struggles adjusting.

Likewise, it would not be a surprise to see Cruz back in Minnesota in 2022. The Twins are going to need to add to their lineup, and a power bat such as Cruz, even though he has already turned 41 years old, would be a perfect fit. Such a reunion seems inevitable.

It is not a surprise that he would be keeping tabs on the organization and their prospects. If Cruz is going to return, he would want to familiarize himself with some of his future teammates. Meeting Ryan, one of the players he was traded for, is a good place to start.
