New York Mets giving Michael Conforto Qualifying Offer right call
It is easy to view the 2021 season as a disappointment for Michael Conforto. The New York Mets outfielder was expected to be an important part of the lineup, but is in the midst of one of the worst seasons of his career instead. As he is an impending free agent, Conforto could not have picked a worse time for his season long slump.
But that is not stopping the Mets from regarding him as part of their future. According to reports, they are prepared to place the Qualifying Offer on Conforto in the hopes that he will return for the 2022 campaign.
New York Mets looking to keep Michael Conforto around
The Mets had been attempting to lock Conforto into a long term extension prior to the start of the season, but were unable to come to terms. As he did not desire to continue discussions during the year, preferring his focus to be on the diamond, the QO always seemed to be a likely option.
However, that was before the start of the season. Conforto had a miserable start to the year, one that he is still trying to dig himself out of. That slow start can be readily seen in his overall production, as Conforto has produced a 101 OPS+ with 12 homers and 17 doubles heading into Wednesday’s action.
But Conforto has picked up the pace lately. Since August 6, he has produced a .278/.374/.460 batting line with six homers and five doubles. That production is more along the lines of what the Mets have come to expect from their right fielder, making the QO worth pursuing.
In the end, the Mets still appear to regard Conforto as a part of their future. It would not be a surprise to see the two sides engage in extension talks if he does accept the QO. Considering his struggles this season, it would not be overly surprising if he did, regarding the deal as a one year bridge to prove himself once again.
The New York Mets are expected to make the Qualifying Offer to Michael Conforto. Given his recent surge, it is the right move.
