There was a time when Anthony Gose was one of the top prospects in baseball as an outfielder. He was a key part of the return for Roy Oswalt, only to be flipped for another top prospect in Brett Wallace. A consensus top 100 prospect prior to the 2012 season, Gose had intriguing power and speed, as well as a cannon of an arm in the outfield. However, those tools never quite translated to the majors, leaving Gose back in the minors as he attempted to convert to the mound.

Now, more than five years after his last major league appearance, that long journey back is over. The Cleveland Indians are calling him up as he will be a part of their bullpen.

Gose certainly worked his way back. He spent three years bouncing between High-A and Double-A, spending time in the Tigers, Rangers, and Indians organizations. While he touched triple digits with his fastball, his command had been spotty at best, limiting his effectiveness on the mound.

Those concerns are still in place, but Gose had been solid in his first stint on the mound in Triple-A. Although he issued 28 walks in 33 innings this year, he still posted a 3.55 ERA and a 1.455 WHiP, striking out 49 batters. Those numbers were at least enough to get him on the Indians’ radar.

But those numbers also hide what has been an impressive run of late. He has allowed just three hits and six walks in 13 scoreless innings, striking out 21 batters. Those numbers would certainly play at the major league level, especially for a team that will be looking for answers in the bullpen.

For Gose, this is the culmination of years of hard work. He had completely started over, returning to the lower levels in the hope that he could resurrect his career. That journey has finally reached its conclusion as Gose is back in the majors.
