There are certain umpires that essentially personify the call for an electronic strike zone. Angel Hernandez, also known as one of the world umpires that Major League Baseball has ever seen, is at the top of that list. He has become infamous amongst players and fans for his inability to call a proper game, seemingly watching a different contest than the one playing out before him.
While Hernandez is no stranger to being a disaster on the diamond, his performance on Tuesday was one for the ages. He missed 27 pitches over the game, including this curve that missed the zone by nearly five inches.
Angel Hernandez continues to disgrace MLB umpires
Any umpire can have a bad night. It happens to even the best of them. But one has to almost try to be this entirely incompetent, making it seem as though Frank Dreben found his way behind the plate in an attempt to stop an assassination attempt on the Queen.
But that is where we are with Hernandez. His complete incompetence in every facet of the game, be it calling strikes or plays on the basepaths, is astonishing. Sometimes, he even finds himself making up rules when he is far too confused to understand what is happening in front of him.
This is not going to change. There are no repercussions for grotesque incompetence as a major league umpire, allowing Hernandez to keep his job. Short of lighting the rule book on fire at the plate, there is little that will result in his being removed from a job that he is completely incapable of performing.
As a result, we are left with these performances. We are left watching Hernandez umpire games with his eyes closed, pretending to know what he is doing and getting paid well to be a disaster. It is frustrating for fans, players, and coaches alike.
Angel Hernandez continues to be the biggest joke in Major League Baseball. The problem is that players and fans are not laughing.
