It is that time of year when speculation as to which managers will be shown the door begins. For some managers, it is clear – their franchises fell far short of the lofty expectations from the preseason. Then, for other teams, such as the Baltimore Orioles, their dreadful season had been considered to potentially lead to changes, even though they were not expected to contend.

But that will not be the case in Baltimore. Manager Brandon Hyde will be back for at least the beginning of the 2022 season.

Hyde has not exactly had the greatest of luck in terms of wins and losses during his time with the Orioles. He has posted a 127-246 record since the start of the 2019 season, with the pandemic shortened 2020 campaign being the only reason why the Orioles have not lost 100 games in every one of his years on the bench.

But that should not fall upon Hyde’s shoulders. It is extremely difficult to win when a team is obviously tanking as the Orioles are. They have not attempted to win since Hyde was brought in as the manager, and it is highly unlikely that will be changing next year either.

As such, Hyde’s job is not going to be measured by his winning percentage. Instead, it will depend on how well those younger players develop at the major league level. As the likes of Ryan Mountcastle, Cedric Mullins, and John Means have begun to develop into building blocks for the major league roster, Hyde has done his part.

This does not mean that he will be around to see the finished product. At some point, the Orioles will need to start to show improvement in terms of wins and losses. No matter how well those players are developing, the results will need to show on the diamond at some point. Otherwise, Hyde will be on the unemployment line, even if that will not be the case this offseason.
