Teruaki Sato sets Hanshin Tigers record no one wants
Every rookie dreams of finding their way into the record books. They all want to be a star on the biggest stage possible, their names remembered forever for their accomplishments on the diamond. However, Hanshin Tigers rookie Teruaki Sato set a team record that no one would want.
Sato had been struggling to get hits during his time with the Tigers. On Friday, his streak of futility reached 41 plate appearances, a new team record.
Teruaki Sato cannot buy a hit for Hanshin Tigers
Sato’s unfortunate streak has come in two parts. He had gone 35 plate appearances without a hit before the Tigers sent him back to the minors on September 10. He was then recalled on Thursday and re-inserted into the lineup, where his hitless streak continued.
Even with those issues, Sato has had a solid enough season. He has produced a 790 OPS in his 403 plate appearances, hitting 24 doubles and 23 homers. However, one could see where he would start to have issues, as Sato has drawn just 20 walks while striking out 153 times.
Sato’s struggles do not change the Tigers’ hopes for the young outfielder. He was considered to be the top power hitter in his draft class, but had also impressed with his speed and strong throwing arm. Sato has spent time at third as well this season, showing a solid glove along with his impressive arm strength.
As he is young for the top level of Nippon Professional Baseball, it is not much of a surprise that Sato has had his struggles. That will change as he adjusts to the league, just as they have adjusted to him. Considering his pedigree, it is just a matter of time before that happens.
Teruaki Sato has made history for the Hanshin Tigers. It just is not the type of history he wanted to make in his rookie season.
