Noah Syndergaard is set to become one of the more fascinating pitchers in free agency this offseason. He had gone nearly two full seasons between appearances with the New York Mets as he dealt with Tommy John surgery and various setbacks. Although he looked like his usual self in his perfect inning on Tuesday, one inning is not nearly enough to judge him on.

However, Syndergaard does not sound like someone who expects to spend much time in free agency. Although he says a deal is not forthcoming just yet, he expects to remain with the Mets for 2022.

Noah Syndergaard not expecting to leave New York Mets

If Syndergaard is healthy, there is no question that he could be a difference maker at the top of any rotation. He has posted a 3.30 ERA and a 1.159 WHiP over his 717 innings, striking out 777 batters with just 166 walks. At just 29 years old, he could be an ace caliber pitcher for years to come.

But the question is whether or not he can stay healthy. Even before he missed almost two complete seasons, he only had two years with at least 30 appearances. Any team that would be interested would be taking a major financial gamble.

He would certainly be a boost to the Mets rotation in 2022. Having both Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom healthy at the start of the season would make a major difference in ownership’s stated demand that the franchise return to the postseason.

The Mets have options when it comes to bringing him back. They could put the Qualifying Offer on him, something that he may well accept. Such a move, while costly, would keep the Mets from being locked into a long term deal if Syndergaard breaks down once again.

Likewise, the QO would give the Mets roughly a year to work out that longer term contract. If Syndergaard shows that he is healthy in spring training and into the season, then it may be time to discuss that extension.
