Edmundo Sosa has filled an important role for the St. Louis Cardinals this season. With Paul DeJong continuing to struggle with the bat, Sosa has gone from a utility infielder to being a part of the starting lineup, taking over as the Cardinals’ primary shortstop over the past few weeks. His emergence has been a key part of their surge into the postseason as the Cardinals roared into the playoffs on the strength of their impressive 17 game winning streak.

On Friday, Sosa showed everyone a bit more than expected. Due to a rip in his pants when he slid into second base, the Cardinals’ infielder was exposed on the basepaths.

This is the sort of thing that can happen when sliding into a base. Players have ripped knees in their pants, or the occasional rip in the seat of their uniform. In this case, a larger part of Sosa was left exposed, showing an impressive scrape that he received when sliding into second.

Sosa is certainly deserving of attention this year. He has produced a surprising 109 OPS+ over his 319 plate appearances, hitting six homers and eight doubles. He ranks ninth in the National League with 1.6 dWAR, his versatility and solid range at second, third, and short making a difference for the Cardinals.

In this case, Sosa found eyes on him for a reason that no one could have anticipated. His ripped pants, and the subsequent examination of that scrape, left him rather exposed on the basepaths. Those watching at home certainly saw more of Sosa than they would have imagined.
