The Toronto Blue Jays have gone out of their way to build their future on the past. Current stars such as Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, and Cavan Biggio all had fathers who played in the majors. Griffin Conine, who had impressed in the minors this season, is another second generation player that the Blue Jays are hoping will develop into a part of their future as well.

The Blue Jays have continued that trend with their latest international signing. They have also signed Gregory Cano, the younger brother of current Mets second baseman Robinson Cano, and son of former major league pitcher Jose Cano.

Toronto Blue Jays continue to bank on bloodlines

There is not a lot of information about Cano available. He is a 17 year old third baseman, one whose brother has had a solid, if tainted, career in the majors. His father spent a decade in the minors, finally getting six major league appearances in 1989.

Based on what video is available, Cano appears worthy of that modest financial gamble. He has a solid swing from the left side, showing some loft even if the swing is a bit flat. Defensively, Cano appears to have solid range at the hot corner and a strong enough throwing arm, although it is difficult to tell much from a barely 90 second YouTube video.

However, Cano has exactly what the Blue Jays look for. The bloodlines are there, and he appears to be a projectable prospect. The elder Cano is also a respected coach in the Dominican, which would presumably make the Blue Jays’ newest prospect someone who would respond well to coaching, allowing him to get the most out of his talent.

The Toronto Blue Jays have added more second generation talent. Gregory Cano, brother of Robinson Cano and son of Jose Cano, is the latest member of the organization.
