The Colorado Rockies are at least doing something. For the first time in years, they are being proactive, signing Antonio Senzatela and C.J. Cron to extensions. There seems to be a plan in place, as the Rockies front office looks to lock in those players who have proven that they can handle playing in Coors Field.

That plan also includes reaching out to Jon Gray. The Rockies are reportedly looking to sign him to a long term extension before he enters free agency, although there have not been any talks of yet.

Jon Gray needs to run from the Colorado Rockies

It is understandable as to why the Rockies would want to keep Gray in town. There have been times when he has performed at an ace level, including the 2017 and 2019 seasons when he posted a sub 4.00 ERA. He bounced back from an injury plagued 2020 campaign to have a solid showing last year, posting a 4.59 ERA and a 1.329 WHiP over his 149 innings, striking out 157 batters with 58 walks.

But it may speak volumes that there is no traction in terms of talks. Gray, much like Trevor Story, was expected to be sent away at the trade deadline this year. While Story was vocal about his frustrations at not being traded, one could imagine that Gray had similar feelings, albeit much quieter.

It is expected that the Rockies will, if all else fails, put the Qualifying Offer on Gray. It is also highly likely that he will decline that offer, especially as he could receive a solid long term deal in free agency. Gray may not be an ace on another team, but he would be a solid middle of the rotation arm.

There also comes a time when a player wants to win. The Rockies, while they may actually have a direction now, are not close to being a contending franchise. If Gray wants to reach the postseason, he needs to head somewhere else.
