Make no mistake about it, San Diego Padres fans. Ron Washington believes he has the right tools to be not only the next manager for the Padres, but also lead them toward the top of the National League standings.

As our own FanSided MLB insider Robert Murray reported during his time at the NLDS in Milwaukee when the Brewers hosted the Atlanta Braves (where Washington currently serves as the team’s third base coach), the 69-year-old Washington believes he has the experience to be the missing link between San Diego’s talented roster and the team making a deep run into the postseason.

"“I think I’m qualified,” Washington said as part of Murray’s column. “I think I can get that team over the hump. That’s my thinking. I need that general manager to think like that. I’m definitely able to get them where they want to go.”"

Why Ron Washington is more than qualified to take over the San Diego Padres

Washington spent eight seasons at the helm of the Texas Rangers, compiling an overall 664-611 record. His 2010 and 2011 squads advanced to the World Series and his next two teams would win 93 and 91 games, respectively. However, Washington resigned late in the 2014 campaign with his team struggling at 53-87. Washington later revealed that off-the-field issues led to his resignation, along with the team’s record.

Since then, Washington has served as the infield coach and third base coach for the Oakland A’s before becoming a candidate for the Atlanta Braves managerial opening. When the Braves promoted Brian Snitker, Washington became the team’s third base coach in time for the 2017 season.

As Murray pointed out, Washington worked with current Padres general manager A.J. Preller during his time with the Rangers, so the two men are very familiar with each other. Washington was also interviewed for San Diego’s managerial spot in 2019 before the team went with Jayce Tingler, who was fired just after the conclusion of the 2021 campaign as San Diego failed to meet preseason expectations.

Next. Is A.J. Preller the real problem in San Diego?. dark

Washington is reported to be one of the leading candidates for the opening, and he certainly seems eager to embrace the role. Will the Padres land him before the 2022 season after passing him up the last time there was an opening?
