The Miami Marlins are likely to make quite a few moves this offseason. Team president/CEO Derek Jeter is tired of the losing, and is ready to change the roster. While this may involve trading from their core of young pitching, the Marlins will need to open roster spots for players they hope to acquire, as well as for the seven players on the 60 day Injured List.

Those cuts began on Thursday. The Marlins have outrighted four players from their 40 man roster, including Olympic silver medalist Eddy Alvarez.

Miami Marlins outright Eddy Alvarez from 40 man roster

Alvarez has already made history. He won a silver medal in the 2020 Olympics as part of the United States baseball team and won another silver medal as part of the US speed skating squad in the 2014 Winter Games. Alvarez was the first person to ever win a medal in the Winter Olympics to appear in the majors, and is just the third American to earn a medal in both the Summer and Winter Games.

That historic run could not save Alvarez’s spot with the Marlins. He appeared in parts of the last two years, posting a combined .188/.287/.287 batting line with five doubles and a homer in his 115 plate appearances. Although he has hit well at Triple-A, he may be best suited as minor league infield depth.

But these will not be the only moves that the Marlins make. They already have to outright three more players from the 40 man roster in order to activate everyone from the 60 day IL, potentially leading to some difficult decisions.

But that is part of the improvement process. The Marlins need to find players that will do something with the bat if they are going to have any hope of contending next season. A player such as Alvarez, who may be a solid depth option, is not that.

The Miami Marlins outrighted Eddy Alvarez from their 40 man roster. While he made MLB history, he just could not produce enough to warrant the spot.
