What is the all-time World Series record for the Braves and Astros?
With the 2021 World Series beginning on Tuesday night in Houston, it’s a good chance to look back at the history of the Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves in their quest for a championship.
For the purposes of this article, we will only look at the win-loss records for the Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves under their current names and cities rather than any past names or locations of the franchises (such as the Boston Beaneaters that eventually morphed into the Atlanta Braves).
Atlanta Braves all-time record in the World Series
Atlanta has been to five World Series, winning the Fall Classic for the first and only time in 1995 by defeating the Cleveland Indians, 4-2. That is part of an overall 11-18 record for the Braves in the World Series.
In that 1995 World Series, Tom Glavine was named MVP, throwing 14.0 innings and allowing just four hits and striking out 11 while posting a 1.29 ERA.
While 1995 was the only time the Braves have won it all, it isn’t the last time they were in the Fall Classic. The Braves returned the World Series the season after winning the crown (1996), but lost in six games to the New York Yankees. Atlanta’s most recent trip was 1999, when the Braves were swept in four games by the Yankees.
Houston Astros all-time record in the World Series
While Atlanta hasn’t been to the World Series this century, Houston has been three times in the 2000s prior to qualifying for this year’s Fall Classic. The Astros captured the 2017 World Series in seven games over the Los Angeles Dodgers to earn the franchise’s first and only world championship. George Springer was named as the World Series MVP, posting a .379/.471/1.000 slash line with an OPS of 1.471 in 29 at-bats.
Houston also played in a seven game series in 2019, losing the decisive Game 7 to the Washington Nationals at home, 6-2.
The only other appearance for Houston happened in 2005 when they were a member of the National League Central. The Astros were swept in four games by the Chicago White Sox.
In all, Houston has a 7-11 mark in the World Series.
