The New York Mets have desperately been trying to find anyone to actually be interested in running their front office. While their initial short list may have been a pipe dream, none of the other potential candidates have had any interest. It is at the point where the Mets are struggling to even get an interview.

But there is one potential candidate that would likely be interested. Jeff Luhnow, the disgraced former Astros general manager, could be the perfect candidate to step in as the Mets new general manager.

Jeff Luhnow would be great fit for New York Mets

Luhnow had an unceremonious departure from the Astros. He, along with manager AJ Hinch, was fired in the wake of the AstroGate scandal. Both parties also received a one year suspension, which has since been served.

However, while Hinch was able to return to a managerial role, Luhnow has remained outside the game. Perhaps he is viewed as somehow being more guilty, even though those shenanigans were taking place in the dugout…where Hinch was.

Meanwhile, Luhnow was the architect of the Astros 2017 World Series winning club, as well as the team that won the AL pennant in 2019. His fingerprints are all over this year’s team as well, as his moves have had a long term impact upon the Astros fortunes.

If one ignores his past discipline, Luhnow is exactly the type of executive the Mets would want. He has built a contending franchise, finding the right fits in free agency and in trades while building up the farm system. He turned the Astros into a sustainably winning franchise, one whose window of contention has remained open longer than one may have expected.

That is what the Mets are looking to build as well. Owner Steve Cohen has said that his goal is to turn the Mets into a major market club, one that spends at the top of the free agent market and can build a sustainable winner. Luhnow may be the perfect choice.
