The Miami Marlins are determined to build a sustainable contender. Between Derek Jeter’s comments about looking to have an active offseason, and their quest to add impact bats to the lineup, the Marlins should be one of the more fascinating teams to watch.

The Marlins extended someone that they envision as a part of that core on Wednesday. Miguel Rojas has signed a two year extension worth $10 million, keeping him in Miami through 2023.

Miami Marlins keep a piece of their core

Rojas may not be the type of hitter the Marlins are looking for, but he has been a valuable piece of the lineup. An excellent defensive shortstop, he saved six runs at the position this year, and led all National League shortstops with eight runs saved in 2020. His ability to play anywhere on the infield adds to his value as he is a viable backup wherever he may be needed.

He did, however, put together one of the better offensive seasons of his career. After an impressive 2020 with the bat, Rojas followed with a respectable .265/.322/.392 batting line with nine homers and 30 doubles in his 539 plate appearances this season.

Rojas is well worth the price at a total of $10 million. His respectable production with the bat, coupled with his excellent defense, could actually make him a bargain. And, at that salary, should the Marlins find themselves with an upgrade at short, he would be affordable as a utility infielder.

Additionally, Rojas’ extension does not exactly break the bank. As the Marlins have plans to add an impact bat or two to their lineup, they would still be able to spend the money to upgrade the roster. Rojas simply allows them to ensure that shortstop will be in capable hands in the present and near future.

The Miami Marlins have kept a piece of their core with Miguel Rojas. His extension should still allow them to pursue other hitters in free agency.
