The New York Yankees have clearly made shortstop a priority this offseason. As general manager Brian Cashman stated, they need to upgrade the position, finding someone who can handle short both defensively and offensively. Fortunately, this is the Year of the Shortstop, as several top players at the position are set to become available in free agency.

However, there is one shortstop that the Yankees are tepid on. According to reports, the Yankees just are not that interested in Trevor Story.

New York Yankees not too interested in Trevor Story

It had been reported earlier that the Yankees seemingly had their sights set on Corey Seager. While Seager is one of the top shortstops in the game when healthy, that has been a major caveat throughout his career. As he is expected to command a $300 million contract, he would be a gamble for any team interested in his services.

light. More Yankees. Seager considered top shortstop target

Story, meanwhile, would seem to be a safer investment. He has appeared in over 140 games in each of the past four full seasons, showing that health that Seager has not. His lifetime .272/.340/.523 batting line with 158 homers, 180 doubles, and 100 steals would fit perfectly in the Yankees lineup.

But there are some red flags. Story had one of the worst seasons of his career in 2021, as his 103 OPS+ ranked ahead of just his 2017 campaign. He is also a much better hitter at Coors Field, as he has posted a lifetime .241/.310/.442 batting line in his 1544 plate appearances on the road, hitting 63 homers and 80 doubles.

Given those home/road splits, it is understandable as to why the Yankees may shy away from Story. Seager may have his own red flags as well, but there are plenty of other options out there. Avoiding a player whose statistics may be inflated by Coors Field is a smart move.
