The Atlanta Braves will host a World Series game for the first time since 1999 on Friday night when the Houston Astros visit Truist Park for Game 3 of the 2021 World Series. After a 7-2 Houston win on Wednesday night, the Fall Classic is knotted at 1-1.

As we discussed in an earlier article, this marks the fourth World Series appearance for the Astros since 2005 and the sixth for the Braves since 1991. How did those teams fare in Game 3 of their World Series appearances? Let’s take a look.

What is the all-time World Series Game 3 record for the Houston Astros?

Houston is 2-1 all-time in Game 3 of the World Series, including 1-0 on the road (a 2019 win at Washington as Michael Brantley drove in a pair of runs in a 4-1 victory).

The only loss for the Astros came during a 2005 sweep at the hands of the Chicago White Sox. Houston, however, lost 7-5 in 14 innings as Geoff Blum homered for the visiting White Sox for what would be the decisive run.

While Houston was swept in that series, they were outscored by a total of six runs in the four losses.

What is the all-time World Series Game 3 record for the Atlanta Braves?

Atlanta is 1-4 all-time (1-1 at home) in Game 3 of the World Series, including dropping its last four Game 3 appearances.

Interestingly, three of the five Game 3 World Series appearances for the Braves have gone into extra innings, including their only win (a 5-4, 12-inning victory over the Minnesota Twins at Fulton County Stadium). In that game, Mark Lemke singled home David Justice with two outs in the 12th to provide the winning margin.

Atlanta’s most recent World Series appearance in Game 3 also ended in extra innings, with the New York Yankees scoring a 6-5 home win in 10 innings on the second home run of the night from Chad Curtis.

What’s the other extra-inning Game 3 for the Braves? That came in 1995 in a 7-6 loss at Cleveland as Atlanta reliever Alejandro Pena opened the 11th by allowing a Carlos Baerga double and then intentionally walking Albert Belle. Eddie Murray, however, followed with an RBI single to give Cleveland the win.
