The New York Yankees found themselves in a strange situation last offseason. As they had exceeded the luxury tax in the previous two seasons, the front office was under orders to keep payroll below that threshold. This resulted in a flawed team that could easily be called a disappointment despite their 92 wins in 2021.

But that was last year and a different Collective Bargaining Agreement. If the luxury tax returns in the new CBA, the Yankees will be starting fresh, their tax penalty at zero. The Evil Empire can return with vaults wide open.

New York Yankees signaling spending spree

That certainly appears to be the case. General manager Brian Cashman referred to the team as being unwatchable at times last season, something that he is well aware he needs to fix. Despite the talent on the roster, and the fact that they made the postseason, there are plenty of holes on the roster.

More Yankees. Gallo getting hate for getting dressed. light

This is something Cashman is well aware of. He already called shortstop a priority, saying that it was time to make a change at the position. The Yankees are considered by some insiders to be the favorites to land Corey Seager, handing him a contract worth approximately $300 million to bring him to the Bronx.

And they may not stop with Seager. The starting rotation needs help, with Gerrit Cole and the surprising Nestor Cortes Jr. as the only two real givens. Likewise, the bullpen was a disaster at times, a collection of relievers that appeared to be walking a tightrope. Add in their need for a center fielder and first baseman, and the Yankees have a lot of shopping to do.

This time, Cashman may have the financial resources he needs to get those pieces. It certainly will not be easy to rebuild the roster, but having a blank check to add those needed pieces will go a long way to solve those problems. Based on Cashman’s comments, that spending spree is coming.

Next. Moving on from Luke Voit. dark

The New York Yankees have a lot of work to do this offseason. Giving Brian Cashman carte blanche to spend as much as he wants will make a difference.
