The San Francisco Giants had high hopes when they signed Tommy La Stella to a three year deal prior to the 2021 season. He had proven himself to be far more than a utility player, emerging as a solid second baseman with excellent contact skills. The Giants hoped that he would solidify the keystone for the foreseeable future.

But La Stella struggled with injuries all season, limiting his effectiveness. The Giants are hopeful that will not be the case next year as he has undergone surgery on his left Achilles.

The 2021 season was a disaster for La Stella on the injury front. He missed time with a fractured hand and a strained hamstring. The Achilles issue popped up over the last few weeks of the season, but he played through the pain to be a part of the Giants’ postseason run.

It was clear that he was not right during the season. La Stella managed a disappointing .250/.308/.405 batting line as he was limited to 242 plate appearances. While he continued to make solid contact, with 18 walks and just 26 strikeouts, he only hit seven homers and 11 doubles. The Giants need more from second.

That is particularly the case moving forward. Donovan Solano is a free agent and may be more valuable to other teams. Wilmer Flores is still under team control, but it is questionable as to whether or not the Giants are willing to trust him in a larger role.

It all comes down to La Stella’s health going forward. He should be ready for spring training, allowing him plenty of time to be ready for the regular season. The Giants certainly hope that he will be able to be the player they had hoped for when he signed.
