It is safe to say that Ryan McBroom did not have a future with the Kansas City Royals. The first baseman/outfielder was buried on the depth chart, and with several intriguing prospects getting closer to the majors, he was not going to get a chance.

The Royals and McBroom were well aware of his situation. As such, the team requested unconditional waivers on McBroom to allow him to pursue an opportunity overseas.

There is no question that McBroom had nothing left to prove in the minors. He had posted a stellar .290/.361/.517 batting line in 1369 plate appearances at Triple-A, hitting 69 homers and 61 doubles. He would seemingly be ready for an extended look at the major league level.

McBroom has had mixed results in his brief time in Kansas City. He had produced a respectable .268/.322/.427 batting line in his 177 plate appearances, hitting six homers and eight doubles. However, he had also struck out 61 times while drawing just 12 walks. Those contact numbers were not going to give him more of a chance.

However, he will get that opportunity overseas. Over the years, plenty of players who appear to be stuck in that Quad-A level have headed elsewhere, hoping to prove themselves worthy of a major league job or to find stardom in a new environment. Now it is McBroom’s turn.

As he will turn 30 at the beginning of the 2022 campaign, there is a chance that could happen. McBroom could dominate wherever he plays, finding his way back to the majors. Or he could end up becoming a star overseas, playing out his career in front of an adoring fanbase.
