Sorry, but this description doesn’t fit the New York Mets at all
Remember that scene in “The Princess Bride” where Vizzini keeps using the word “inconceivable” in sentences and, finally, Inigo Montoya has had enough and says to him, “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means?” Well, this is where it seems we are with the New York Mets and their search for executives.
Yes, movie quotes (and other thoughts as well) quickly popped into our collective heads as baseball fans when we saw this tweet on Tuesday.
Sorry, but if you’re using “the pinnacle of the sport” to describe the current state of the New York Mets, I do not think it means what you think it means.
After all, these are the same Mets who, yes, are having a difficult time getting people who are respected in the industry to interview with them for open positions. These are the same Mets who have parted ways with a pair of general managers this year thanks in large part to legal issues. These are the same Mets who missed the playoffs in 2021 and haven’t been to the postseason since 2016 (with one winning season since that campaign). These are the same Mets who saw their manager fired after the season and their players giving their own fans the “thumbs down” motion during it.
The pinnacle of the sport? Argue for the Houston Astros (cheating or not). Argue for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Even argue for the crosstown New York Yankees when it comes to the most fans around the world and the most interest in buying branded gear. But the Mets? Well, it’s hard to see any kind of pinnacle possibilities there … at least at the moment.
And let’s be clear, Puma did add after his initial tweet that the executive wasn’t being sarcastic. Perhaps he just hasn’t seen a game since the Mets lost to the Kansas City Royals in the 2015 World Series … and even then, it was Kansas City at the pinnacle of the sport.
Neil Simon once quipped, “When it’s 100 degrees in New York, it’s 72 in Los Angeles. When it’s 30 degrees in New York, in Los Angeles it’s still 72. However, there are 6 million interesting people in New York, and only 72 in Los Angeles.” That sums up views on New York. It’s the best in the minds of so many, no matter what others may think or say … or what has gone on for the past year on and off the field with an organization.
