New York Mets taking their time because they have to
The New York Mets find themselves in a difficult spot. The Winter Meetings are set to begin shortly, as will free agency. There are decisions that need to be made regarding impending free agents, such as whether or not to place the Qualifying Offer on the likes of Noah Syndergaard and Michael Conforto. And yet, the Mets do not have a general manager, nor anyone to run the front office.
This does not mean that the Mets are going to put just anyone in those roles. According to reports, they are focused on finding the right fit, even if that quest takes weeks to complete.
New York Mets being forced into patience
It certainly is a nice statement. The Mets are saying that they are taking their time because they want to find the right person. In a vacuum, it makes sense, especially as they are looking to change the culture around the organization.
But that is not the case. The Mets are being forced into taking a patient approach because no one wants to be a part of the organization. Potential candidates are running away as though they are being chased by a horror movie villain.
Naturally, the Mets are going to attempt to spin this in their favor. This delay is entirely according to their plan, and not because virtually every candidate has hung up the phone when contacted. Unfortunately for the Mets, their continued failure in finding someone to even have a conversation about the general manager position is public.
Maybe this will all work out in the end. Maybe the Mets will end up with the right person to lead their front office, ending years of dysfunction and incompetence. Patience, even if it is forced, may end up being a virtue after all.
The New York Mets are claiming that they are being patient in their front office search. That is only because patience is being forced upon them.
