Carlos Correa is as good as gone. He made that clear in his remarks following the World Series as he talked about his time with the Houston Astros in the past tense. As he will be one of the top free agents available, and with multiple teams in need of help at shortstop, it is not a surprise that Correa would be looking forward to reaching the open market.

That does not mean that the Astros are giving up. According to reports, they have made several offers of over $30 million per year to keep him in Houston.

Houston Astros making last minute push to keep Carlos Correa

It is understandable as to why the Astros would want to keep Correa for the long term. He has been one of the better shortstops in the game when on the diamond, posting a 127 OPS+ with 133 homers and 162 doubles in his 3223 plate appearances in his seven seasons in the majors.

Likewise, it is understandable as to why Correa is looking to head into free agency. He led all American League position players with 7.3 bWAR while posting a 131 OPS+ with 26 homers and 34 doubles in his 640 plate appearances this season. His defense was excellent as usual, as he saved 21 runs at short. That combination will lead to a great deal of interest this offseason.

But Correa is a risky proposition. He has been plagued by injury throughout his career, with just three fully healthy seasons. Correa can point to the fact that he has been healthy over the past two years, and is just 27 years old, but a long term deal is still a gamble.

It is also one that the Astros are not comfortable taking. They have their formula, generally refusing to offer more than a five year pact. The fact that they reportedly offered a sixth year to Correa shows that they are serious about keeping him, but he will receive a far more lucrative deal in free agency.

The Houston Astros are making a last ditch effort to keep Carlos Correa. However, they simply are not going to offer enough to keep him around.
