Los Angeles Dodgers: Corey Seager a major risk in free agency
Corey Seager is going to be one of the most coveted free agents this offseason. The Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop is arguably the top free agent available, considered to be atop the list with Carlos Correa. It is really a matter of preference as to which player is considered to be on the top of the list.
As it is, Seager is already expected to get a significant payday. The Yankees are rumored to have a strong interest in his services, with an expected contract of over $300 million. As the Yankees are expected to spend this offseason, and have plenty of holes, Seager would make sense in the middle of their lineup.
Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager a risk for interested teams
It is understandable as to why Seager is going to be such a hotly pursued commodity. He has produced a 131 OPS+ over his career, belting 104 homers and 164 doubles in his 2710 plate appearances. While he may not be a Gold Glove caliber shortstop, he is not a disaster in the field either.
It is entirely possible that he can be even better. Seager will turn 28 at the beginning of the 2022 season and is entering his hypothetical prime. Even a ten year deal would, based on expectations, have at least six or seven years where he would be worth every cent.
However, there are reasons to be concerned with Seager. He has been healthy for just two full seasons in his seven years in the majors, missing time with a litany of injuries. Seager has been impressive when he has been on the diamond, but that is not something that can be counted on.
That makes Seager a major risk. He is someone that can make a major difference when on the diamond, but that is not something that any team bringing him on board can count on. Considering the salary he will command, it may be better to pursue one of the other impressive shortstops that are available.
Corey Seager was excellent when he was on the diamond for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The problem is that he cannot stay healthy.
