The New York Mets‘ quest to find a general manager has become a running gag. Even Jimmy Kimmel weighed in on Twitter, announcing that he had withdrawn his name from consideration. Considering how the team has been unable to get any traction regarding their hunt to fill that vacancy, it is no wonder they have become fodder for late night comedians.

That search may finally be coming to an end. Adam Cromie has emerged as the frontrunner for the position, and may become their new general manager.

Cromie would be an interesting choice to take over that role. He had been a part of the Nationals’ front office until 2017, leaving baseball behind to work at a law office in Pittsburgh. While he was rising through the Nationals’ front office ranks, Cromie had put himself through law school, leading to that career change.

Now, he could be coming back. Cromie met with owner Steve Cohen in person on Tuesday, and provided that meeting went well, the Mets may finally have their GM, albeit one that is somewhat outside the box.

Hiring Cromie would also lead to an interesting dynamic in the front office. Sandy Alderson was hired as the team president to handle more of the business side of the organization, but has been forced to step into the GM role. With a first time GM running the Mets, he would likely be involved in that aspect as well, serving as a mentor for Cromie in the role while assisting in putting the team together.

But Cromie would, conceivably, put an end to the ongoing nightmare that has been the GM spot. Both Jared Porter and Zack Scott were dismissed following behavioral issues. With Alderson taking on the role temporarily, Cromie would be the fourth GM of Cohen’s tenure. They certainly hope he will be the last one for a long time.
