The Toronto Blue Jays have an enviable problem. While teams struggle to find anything resembling competence behind the plate in regards to offense, the Blue Jays have four major league caliber catchers. It is a position that most teams would love to be in, and it is one that makes Toronto a team to watch in trade talks.
The Miami Marlins are also in an impressive position. Due to their crop of talented young pitchers on the cusp of reaching the majors, they are looking to move at least one of their arbitration eligible arms for a bat. The Marlins, in particular, need help in the outfield and behind the plate.
Deal between Toronto Blue Jays and Miami Marlins makes perfect sense
Meanwhile, the Blue Jays, for all of their catching depth, are looking for arms. Even if they are able to bring Robbie Ray back, they could use another solid arm for the middle of their rotation. With the Marlins having made Pablo Lopez and Elieser Hernandez potentially available, there is a deal to be had.
It comes down to which catchers the Blue Jays make available. Gabriel Moreno is likely off the table, but that does not mean that Toronto would not trade one of the other three. In fact, Jon Morosi feels that Alejandro Kirk may be the catcher that heads back to Miami in a hypothetical trade.
Catcher is not the only position that the Blue Jays could help with. Toronto also has a good deal of outfield depth, another area where the Marlins need help. Loudres Gurriel Jr. may be a potential trade chip in that case, as there are questions as to how he fits into the Blue Jays’ future plans.
It is rare to find two teams that line up so perfectly in terms of a potential trade. The Blue Jays surpluses match the Marlins’ needs, while Miami is looking to move arms due to their own backlog. A deal just feels inevitable at this juncture.
