The Detroit Tigers caused some head scratching during the 2020 MLB Draft. While they selected Spencer Torkelson with the first overall pick as expected, he was announced as a third baseman. Considering that Torkelson had not played third base at all in college, that designation was a surprise to many.
It is a decision that is still questioned even after his first professional season. As it turns out, Torkelson may not spend much time at third in the majors.
Spencer Torkelson still Detroit Tigers first baseman of the future
Torkelson’s future defensive home is an interesting question. While he alternated between first and third in his first two minor league stops last season, he did not spend any time at third in Triple-A. However, he did see time at the hot corner in the Arizona Fall League.
That ability to at least be competent at third gives the Tigers options. As they are looking to contend next season, they are going to want his bat in the lineup as much as possible. Adding third base to his resume only leads to more options.
Barring a collapse in spring training, Torkelson is likely to be a part of the Opening Day lineup. He posted a .267/.383/.552 batting line in his 530 plate appearances across three levels, belting 30 homers and 29 doubles. His impressive power is certainly needed on a team that had just three players hit more than 20 homers last year.
Torkelson is also a promise of better days. His ascension to the majors will be a sign that the Tigers are ready to contend, their young core starting to come together. While they will still need to add pieces in free agency, the Tigers’ top prospects are ready to make a difference.
Spencer Torkelson is still regarded as the Detroit Tigers’ first baseman of the future. As long as he hits, the Tigers will find a spot in the lineup for him.
