Shin-Soo Choo staying in Korean Baseball Organization
There had been some speculation about Shin-Soo Choo‘s future in baseball. The former major league outfielder had spent the 2021 season in the Korean Baseball Organization, making his league debut with the SSG Landers. However, there had been reports that Choo was looking to return stateside or possibly retire.
Instead, he is staying in Korea. Choo has signed a one year deal worth approximately $2.3 million to be a part of the Landers for the upcoming season.
Shin-Soo Choo not done just yet
Choo had an impressive first season in the KBO. Despite turning 39 years old halfway through the year, he produced a .263/.409/.450 batting line in his 575 plate appearances, hitting 21 homers and 18 doubles while stealing 25 bases. He was one of two players in the KBO to hit 20 or more homers and steal 20 or more bases last season.
He may be hard pressed to replicate that production next season. As noted by Jeeho Yoo above, Choo had surgery on his left elbow and it is uncertain as to whether or not he will be ready for spring training. He is certainly going to do his part, but even if he is medically cleared, he may need some time before fully being up to speed.
It is clear that Choo still has plenty in the tank. His debut in the KBO was well worth the wait, as he showed glimpses of the player that he had once been. Even if he ends up with an abbreviated season due to his recovery from elbow surgery, Choo may have another solid all around year left in him.
He is also getting the chance to go out on his terms. If this is going to be his final season, he will be able to play in front of his home country, soaking in the adoration he has earned through his prowess on the diamond. He will get the chance to show those fans flashes of who he used to be.
Shin-Soo Choo is back with the SSG Landers for at least one more year. He will have another chance to play in front of his home country.
