The Seattle Mariners have announced that franchise icon and future Hall of Famer, Ichiro Suzuki, will be bestowed forever as a member of the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame in 2022.

Ichiro, who played nearly 1,900 games for the Seattle Mariners and is still in the organization as a roving hitting, outfield, and baserunning coach, will be inducted into the Mariners Hall of Fame on Saturday, August 27, in a ceremony before their game against the Cleveland Guardians. The Mariners will commemorate Ichiro throughout that entire weekend.

Ichiro will become the 10th member of the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame

With his induction, Ichiro will become the 10th member of the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame. Other members of the Mariners Hall of Fame include:

  • Alvin Davis, first baseman, 1984-1991; Roving Minor League Instructor 2012-present (inducted in 1997)
  • Dave Niehaus, first radio/television broadcaster 1977-2010 (inducted in 2000); Ford C. Frick Award Winner 2008. Note: He passed away in 2010.
  • Jay Buhner, outfielder 1988-2001, color analyst 2002-2005, 2011-2012 (inducted in 2004)
  • Edgar Martinez, designated hitter 1987-2004, hitting coach 2015-2018, hitting advisor 2018-present (inducted in 2007). Note: He is also in the MLB Hall of Fame
  • Randy Johnson, starting pitcher 1989-1998 (inducted in 2012). Note: He is also in the MLB Hall of Fame
  • Dan Wilson, catcher 1994-2005, color analyst 2011-2012; minor league catching coordinator/special assignment coach 2013-present (inducted in 2012)
  • Ken Griffey, Jr., outfielder 1989-1999, 2009-2010; special assistant to owner 2011-2021; part-owner of the Mariners 2021-present (inducted in 2013). Note: He is also in the MLB Hall of Fame
  • Lou Piniella, manager 1993-2002 (inducted in 2014)
  • Jamie Moyer, starting pitcher 1996-2006 (inducted in 2015)

Ichiro remains among Seattle’s all-time leaders in numerous categories, including:

  • 1st in hits (2,542), batting (.322), at-bats (7,907), triples (79), and stolen bases (438)
  • 2nd in games (1,861) and runs (1,181)
  • 3rd in doubles (295) and total bases (3,292)

After Ichiro left the Mariners, he played with the New York Yankees and Miami Marlins, but Ichiro never was the same player that he was as a Mariner.

In the first 10 years of his career (all as a Mariner), Ichiro was an All-Star and won a Gold Glove. In 2001, he won the MVP award and Rookie of the Year Award. He also won three Silver Sluggers (2001, 2007, 2009), two batting titles (2001, 2004), and ranked in MVP voting eight other times.

After his first 10 seasons, he did not receive any awards.

Since he played two games with the Mariners to start the season in his native Japan, Ichiro will become eligible for the MLB Hall of Fame in 2025, when he will very likely be inducted on his first ballot.
