Everything has been silent as it pertains to Brett Gardner. Since his option was declined, there has not been any news about the New York Yankees‘ long time outfielder as he has just faded away. It is to be expected given some of the free agents out there, but there had not been even a murmur regarding his plans for next year.

That silence ended on Thursday night. According to Yankees’ general manager Brian Cashman, Gardner is intending on suiting up for the 2022 season.

Brett Gardner’s return to New York Yankees is inevitable

Yes, Cashman has indicated that he has not had any contract discussions with Gardner. That is entirely irrelevant to whether or not he returns to the franchise as any contract talks have been later in the offseason. This way, the Yankees can focus on their needs, then they can bring Gardner back at a mutually agreeable cost.

Gardner was originally expected to serve in a reserve role last season, but ended up playing far more than anyone expected. He was not exactly terrible, posting a .222/.327/.362 batting line in his 461 plate appearances, hitting ten homers and 16 doubles. He also made 105 appearances in center, only costing the Yankees one run in that time.

The Yankees do need outfield depth. That was a part of their offseason shopping list even before Clint Frazier was designated for assignment on Friday. They particularly need someone capable of playing center as Aaron Hicks cannot be trusted to stay healthy.

In theory, Gardner can be that player. The Yankees clearly want an upgrade at the position though, and are heavily involved in Starling Marte‘s market. Signing Marte, or acquiring another centerfielder, would not preclude Gardner from returning however. The Yankees value his leadership and experience, and his willingness to accept a reduced role certainly works to their advantage. It is just a matter of time before he comes back.

Brett Gardner is looking to play again in 2022. Even though they have yet to discuss a contract, expect him to return to the New York Yankees.
