Former Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa has made headlines this offseason, and some of those have happened because he became a free agent. Some, however, have occurred because he also always seems to stir the pot. He stirred the pot a week and a half ago when he ripped former New York Yankees Hall of Fame shortstop and current Miami Marlins CEO Derek Jeter … and now Jeter has responded.
In an interview in Spanish, Correa said that Jeter should not have won any of his five Gold Glove Awards or other defensive accolades.
Former New York Yankees shortstop and Miami Marlins CEO Derek Jeter responded to former Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa on Friday.
The former New York Yankees shortstop and current Miami Marlins CEO Derek Jeter responded to former Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa on Friday. Jeter spoke with the media for the first time since Correa spoke out and Craig Mish of The Miami Herald asked Jeter about it.
Jeter said that he “didn’t really think about it” and he said that it “doesn’t even warrant a response.”
"“I didn’t think much about it,” Jeter said on Friday. “I don’t know how my name came up. My Spanish is not that good. I still haven’t seen it. I don’t know how my name was brought up, but it doesn’t even warrant a response. I could go in a lot of different directions, but I won’t.”"
Needless to say, Carlos Correa will not be signing with the New York Yankees or Miami Marlins because of the comments.
As our colleagues over at Climbing Tal’s Hill noted on Twitter, in the years that Derek Jeter won a Gold Glove Award, he had -13, -27, -16, 3, and -5 Defensive Runs Saved. None of those seasons are exactly worth a Gold Glove Award.
That’s why Correa said that Jeter shouldn’t have won them.
Of course, in the past, there were other instances where the Gold Glove Award was given out to players who did not deserve the award. Perhaps the best example of that is with Rafael Palmeiro, who won a Gold Glove at first base in 1999 despite only playing 28 games at first base (and serving as a designated hitter in 128 games).
