Noah Syndergaard to honor fallen Los Angeles Angels pitcher in 2022
Nick Adenhart was supposed to be a key part of the Los Angeles Angels‘ future. He had been a highly regarded pitching prospect, falling to the 14th round of the 2004 MLB Draft just because he required Tommy John surgery. After a three game trial in 2008, Adenhart made the Angels’ 2019 Opening Day rotation, making the best start of his career in his debut that season. Tragically, his life would be cut short only a few hours later, as he and two others were killed by a drunk driver.
Adenhart’s number 34 remained untouched since his passing. That will not be the case any longer, as Noah Syndergaard will wear that number, looking to honor Adenhart and his memory.

Adenhart remains a constant presence with the Angels. The team established the Nick Adenhart Pitcher of the Year award which has been given to the pitcher who was determined to have the best performance in the regular season. He will continue to live on in the hearts and memories of those who knew him.
While Syndergaard and Adenhart may not have crossed paths, it is clear that the Angels’ newest pitcher is aware of what he meant to the organization. He had worn number 34 throughout his career previously, but wanted to make certain that he could continue to do so with his new team.
One can certainly debate as to whether or not Syndergaard should have been allowed to keep that number. Yes, it had been unofficially retired, but the Angels never actually made the number unavailable. The Angels could have certainly honored Adenhart further by retiring his number.
Syndergaard will now be a reminder of the past while being a symbol of the future. Even though he is on a one year deal, he shows that the organization is actually committed to adding the arms they need to compete. And, by wearing Adenhart’s number, he will remind everyone of what could have been.
