The Boston Red Sox are keeping their manager for at least two more years.

In what may have been the easiest decision of the offseason, the Red Sox announced that they are picking up the team options on manager Alex Cora. This will keep him under contract through the 2024 campaign.

Alex Cora staying with Boston Red Sox through 2024

It is no surprise that the Red Sox are keeping Cora around. He has had nothing but success in his three seasons with the team, winning the World Series as a rookie manager in 2018 and having a winning record each year he has been with the team.

However, there has been some controversy to his tenure. Cora was “let go” prior to the start of the 2020 season due to his part in the AstroGate scandal and his subsequent one year suspension. Ron Roenicke was named the manager for the 2020 season and was fired after the Red Sox missed the postseason.

That led to Cora’s return to Boston. He then took a Red Sox team that had minimal expectations and brought them to the playoffs, advancing to the ALCS before being eliminated. Considering some of the issues in their rotation and bullpen, the fact that Cora brought them that far is fairly remarkable.

It also shows how well the team responds to Cora’s presence. The players had lobbied for his return to the bench following the 2021 season, even though he was considered to be the easy favorite for the job. Now that his options have been picked up, he will not be leaving again any time soon.
