The San Francisco Giants essentially need to replace their entire starting rotation. Aside from Logan Webb, the rest of the rotation all entered free agency at the same time. While the Giants do have plenty of money to spend, replacing four starters is a tall task for any team.

The Giants do seem to have at least one arm in mind. According to reports, they are making a strong push to bring in Alex Cobb to fill one of those spots.

San Francisco Giants making push for Alex Cobb

Cobb had a bit of a resurgence last season for the Angels. He posted a 3.76 ERA and a 1.264 WHiP, striking out 9.5 batters per nine innings. Cobb also did an impressive job of keeping the ball in the yard, allowing just 0.5 homers per nine.

More Giants. A peculiar MVP vote. light

The problem, and this has been the case throughout his career, is that he was unable to remain healthy throughout the season. He pitched in just 93.1 innings in 2021 as he was hindered by wrist and blister problems. That was, however, the most innings he had pitched since 2018.

Even with those injury issues, one could argue that Cobb had one of his best seasons in years. That 2021 season was the closest that he has looked to being the top of the rotation arm he had been expected to be during his time with the Rays.

He would certainly be worth a look for the Giants. Cobb, when healthy, would be one of the better back of the rotation arms in the game. That is really what they have to regard him as at this point – if he is being viewed as a potential top of the rotation arm, then the Giants may be in trouble in 2022.
