Bring back Ramon Laureano

Back in the 2017-18 offseason, the Houston Astros made what seemed like a minor deal at the time. Minor league outfielder Ramon Laureano was sent to the A’s for another minor leaguer, pitcher Brandon Bailey.

While Laureano has gone on to be a solid all around player in Oakland, Bailey never made much of an impact in Houston. He had been left unprotected in the 2019 Rule V Draft, being selected and eventually returned by the Orioles. Bailey made five solid appearances for the Astros, but was sold to the Reds after the season.

Now the Astros find themselves needing help in center field. While most teams are fixated on pursuing Starling Marte, Houston could fix that mistake by bringing Laureano back. The A’s have indicated that they are ready for a fire sale, and while the Astros may have to be a divisional tax, he would be the piece they need.

Yes, there are issues. Laureano has been vocal about the AstroGate scandal. He attempted to attack Alex Cintron during a game in 2020, with both ultimately receiving suspensions. And Laureano still has a PED suspension to finish next year. But his blend of defense, speed, decent pop, and fiery leadership are traits that the Astros could use next year.

It may take a lot of meetings to bring everyone on the same page. But Ramon Laureano is the type of player the Houston Astros need in their outfield.
