Vladimir Guerrero Jr. finally had the breakout season that the Toronto Blue Jays had been waiting for. He lived up to his gaudy prospect rankings, making his first All Star Game and finishing second in the AL MVP balloting. At 22 years old, the sky seems to be the limit.

Guerrero is also not content to rest on his laurels from 2021. He is working to arrive to spring training in better shape to have an even better season in 2022.

He appeared to finally take his conditioning seriously during the previous offseason. Guerrero showed up to spring training notably slimmer and more muscular, something he said was designed to allow him to play in the field more.

That improved conditioning also resulted in his best season in his burgeoning career. Guerrero posted a .311/.401/.601 batting line in his 698 plate appearances, hitting 48 homers. He led the league in homers, runs scored, on base percentage, slugging, and total bases while helping the Blue Jays to a 91 win season.

Both Guerrero and the Blue Jays want more. After getting a taste of the postseason in 2020, and falling one game short last year, they are hungry to return. While that means that the Blue Jays are working to upgrade their roster, it also means that Guerrero will be working even harder to be in better shape than he was last year.

If he is able to do so, and build off of his impressive performance in 2021, those postseason dreams may become reality. Guerrero may even capture the MVP award, his performance leading the Blue Jays to the Promised Land. But he also knows how much work he needs to put in to get there.
