The Seattle Mariners were after Adam Frazier at the trade deadline last season. Their quest to upgrade the roster had led them to the Pirates, where they were looking at both Frazier and Bryan Reynolds. Frazier ended up heading to San Diego while Reynolds remained in Pittsburgh, where the Pirates are hoping to sign him to an extension.

It may have taken a bit longer than expected, but the Mariners finally got their man on Saturday. Frazier is heading to the Pacific Northwest as Seattle is sending a pair of prospects to the Padres.

Seattle Mariners finally get Adam Frazier

Frazier fits the type of player that Jerry Dipoto is attempting to bring to Seattle. His ability to make contact and get on base fits what he wants out of his lineup, while Frazier’s defensive versatility makes it that much easier to slot him into the lineup. While he is currently penciled in as the Mariners’ second baseman, that can be subject to change depending on other moves during the offseason.

A first time All Star in 2021, Frazier had what could be considered his best season in the majors. He produced a .305/.368/.411 batting line in his 639 plate appearances between Pittsburgh and San Diego, hitting 36 doubles and stealing ten bases while striking out just 69 times. That production would fit nicely at the top of the Mariners’ lineup.

Bringing Frazier into the fold does not preclude the Mariners from making further deals. Seattle is known to be heavily interested in Marcus Semien at second base as well. Frazier’s versatility would allow him to move around the diamond, getting opportunities in the outfield and at second should another second baseman be brought in.

For San Diego, this appears to be a salary dump. While Ray Kerr is an intriguing lefty reliever who can reach triple digits on the radar gun, he is also 27 and just received his first extended look at Triple-A last season. Corey Rosier was a 12th round selection in the 2021 MLB Draft, and while he was impressive in Low-A last year, is years away from making an impact on the Padres.
