One has to give the Colorado Rockies some credit. Unlike other teams in their situation, the Rockies are putting forth an effort to attempt to contend. While that has involved retaining as many of their own players as possible, at least they are trying.

There is, however, a time where that confidence crosses the line to delusion, a line that the Rockies have crossed several times before. That line is being crossed once again as they are attempting to sign Kris Bryant.

Colorado Rockies pursuit of Kris Bryant is laughable

It is commendable when teams make the attempt to contend. That is happening with several teams around the league as the Rangers and Tigers, in particular, are looking to re-emerge as viable playoff teams. But it also takes more than just one player to change the fortunes of a team.

But that would not be the case in Colorado. The Rockies are far more than a Kris Bryant away from contending in the NL West. They desperately need pitching, in every aspect, which had been the case even before Jon Gray escaped to Texas.

Maybe Bryant would be the start of something. After all, the Rockies’ interest in his services is a departure from the norm as they are actually looking outside of the organization. They have finally come to realize that, in order to improve, they should look at players from different teams. It would be similar to when the Padres signed Eric Hosmer as a sign that they were serious about competing.

It could be that the Rockies have a similar strategy. It also bears repeating that this is the same organization that botched the trade deadline, failed to put the Qualifying Offer on Gray, and somehow seems to think that they can get Trevor Story to return. There could actually be a plan in place, but it is difficult to imagine that ever being the case in Colorado.

The Colorado Rockies are interested in Kris Bryant. While that is a step in the right direction, they need more than one player to contend.
