The free agent frenzy continues as just moments ago, free agent starting pitcher Marcus Stroman announced on Twitter that he has a new team. He will be a member of the Chicago Cubs in 2022.

The financial terms and length of the deal are not yet known but it is a big splash for the Chicago Cubs as the lockout is looming in just hours.

The Chicago Cubs have agreed to terms with free agent starting pitcher Marcus Stroman

Marcus Stroman was one of the best free agent starting pitchers on the market and, now, he will be a member of the Chicago Cubs after he was with the New York Mets since 2019.

Stroman, who will turn 31 in May, garnered interest from a lot of teams including the Mets, Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants, and Seattle Mariners. However, in the last week, the Mets have signed Max Scherzer, the Red Sox have signed James Paxton, the Giants have signed Alex Wood and Alex Cobb, and the Mariners signed the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Robbie Ray for their rotations.

The Los Angeles Angels were the only other team known to have interest in Stroman but haven’t addressed their starting pitching. But the Angels have always been known to fall short of getting a big starting pitcher for a multi-year deal on the free agent market.

In recent years, Stroman has been a victim of awful run-support as he is 20-26 since 2019 (he opted out of the 2020 season due to the pandemic) but he has an ERA of 3.12 in that span. He also got a lot of no-decisions as he made 65 starts.

He was an All-Star in 2019 and in 2017, which was arguably his best season, he came in 8th in AL Cy Young Award voting and he won a Gold Glove when he was with the Toronto Blue Jays.

dark. Next. Where have the top 25 free agents signed so far?

Stroman is the third signing of the day for the Cubs as they signed catcher Yan Gomes and former Yankees outfielder Clint Frazier today as well. For the starting rotation, Stroman will likely be the ace among the other starters as he will likely be joined by Kyle Hendricks, Wade Miley, Adbert Alzolay, and Alec Mills.
