Philadelphia Phillies sign Cuban prospect Dariam Gutierrez
Even though there is a lockout, major league teams can still conduct most of their business as usual. Major league signings and trades cannot happen, but minor league deals are still occurring. For a team such as the Philadelphia Phillies, it can be an opportunity to add some depth or even make an international signing or two.
The Phillies did the latter on Monday. They have reportedly signed Cuban outfielder Dariam Gutierrez to a deal with a $20,000 bonus.
Philadelphia Phillies sign intriguing international prospect
Gutierrez had left Cuba in 2020, setting up residency in the Dominican Republic. He had trained at Jesus Mateo’s academy in the Dominican, getting back into baseball shape after leaving the island nation behind.
Although he is a bit older for an international prospect at 19 years old, Gutierrez is certainly intriguing. His power potential and speed were going to attract scouts despite the fact that he is in his late teens. That power could increase as well as he fills out and gets into the Phillies’ system.
However, it is unlikely that he will be charging through the system. For all of his talent and his impressive tools, Gutierrez is still a very raw prospect. He will need to refine his game if he is going to develop into the type of player that he could become.
Nonetheless, it is a worthwhile gamble for the Phillies. At just $20,000, they have the type of raw talent that teams dream of. He could well develop into a star if he can live up to that potential, turning that lottery ticket into a jackpot for the organization.
The Philadelphia Phillies are taking a chance on a player with impressive tools. Dariam Gutierrez could end up providing quite the payoff.
