Max Scherzer has thoughts on New York Mets manager hunt
The New York Mets have been busy lately. Shortly after finding their general manager, they set the baseball universe on fire with their shopping spree. The outfield was almost completely remade, their depth improved, and they landed one of the top pitchers in the game in Max Scherzer.
The Mets are not done with their list. They still need to find a manager, with several candidates having been mentioned and set to interview. However, if Scherzer has his way, the Mets will hire Buck Showalter as their next skipper.
Max Scherzer wants Buck Showalter as New York Mets’ next manager
Scherzer is not the only person on the Mets championing Showalter’s cause. Owner Steve Cohen has also stated that the long time manager is his preference as well, giving Showalter another push.
Those endorsements may not be needed. General manager Billy Eppler is also a fan of Showalter’s and had wanted to hire him as Brad Ausmus‘ replacement with the Angels. Ultimately, he was overridden by Angels’ owner Arte Moreno, who brought in Joe Maddon to lead the team.
Showalter does have his strong points. He has managed in New York before, doing so during the reign of King George with the Yankees. A three time Manager of the Year, Showalter has been able to help get teams to the cusp of the postseason, reaching the playoffs five times.
Obviously, expectations will be higher with the Mets. The postseason is not a hope – it is a demand. And it remains to be seen as to whether or not Showalter will want to manage a team with such pressure in place. However, he may be the right person for the job.
The New York Mets are starting to search for their new manager. If Max Scherzer and Steve Cohen have their way, Buck Showalter will take the helm.
