Los Angeles Dodgers show how far Carson Fulmer has fallen
The minor league portion of the Rule V Draft took place on Wednesday. Several players with major league experience, as well as several former top prospects that just have not panned out thus far, were selected in those five rounds. However, one of the most interesting selections took place in the second round, when the Los Angeles Dodgers drafted Carson Fulmer.
There was a time when Fulmer was expected to be a future ace for the White Sox. He was selected with the eighth overall pick in the 2015 MLB Draft, and had been in the running for the top overall selection. Fulmer was considered one of the top prospects in baseball prior to the 2016 season, making his major league debut later that year.
Los Angeles Dodgers latest team to give Carson Fulmer a chance
Although he showed flashes of his potential at the major league level, he has been unable to put it all together. Fulmer has posted a 6.41 ERA and a 1.584 WHiP in his 130.2 innings over parts of six seasons, striking out 118 batters. His command issues have kept him from reaching his lofty prospect status as he has issued 82 walks while hitting 17 batters in that time.
His pedigree as a former high draft pick and a well regarded prospect keep leading to chances. After being released by the White Sox, he has spent time with the Tigers, Pirates (twice), Orioles, and Reds organizations. The Dodgers are just the latest team to take a chance on him.
But at some point, that potential has to lead to results. Fulmer has struggled in the majors and in the upper minors, getting moved through the farm system strictly because of his draft status. He simply has not justified the chances he has received.
Maybe that will change with the Dodgers. Maybe the Dodgers can fix whatever is plaguing Fulmer with his command, helping him to become a viable part of a major league pitching staff. Otherwise, it will just be another chance where he just could not live up to expectations.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are the latest team to take a chance on Carson Fulmer. His selection in the Rule V Draft is a sign of how far he has fallen.
