Second base is a potential trouble spot for the Chicago White Sox. Andrew Vaughn is currently atop their depth chart at the position despite the fact that he has all of one game of experience at second. To make matters worse, the White Sox do not have anyone in the farm system that could slot into the lineup for the upcoming year.

The White Sox do have a potential option for second. Yoan Moncada had spent his first two seasons in Chicago as the team’s regular second baseman, logging 203 games at the position. However, as it currently stands, the White Sox are not planning to move Moncada back to the keystone.

Chicago White Sox not moving Yoan Moncada to second

Moncada had not exactly performed well at second previously. He had cost the White Sox four runs defensively while producing a 98 OPS+ in his 881 plate appearances. However, once he moved to the hot corner, his bat and glovework drastically improved.

In this case, it is a matter of keeping Moncada at a position where he is obviously comfortable. His production at the plate has taken off to the point where he is viewed as an All Star candidate. While he may never be a Gold Glove caliber third baseman, he has become a solid defensive option at the position.

While it is understandable that the White Sox want to keep Moncada at third, it is also a matter of being able to find pieces for the lineup. While they did retain Leury Garcia, he is best used as a utility option. Josh Harrison or Niko Goodrum may be the best options in free agency, but the White Sox may be better off attempting to trade for a second baseman.

Meanwhile, there are several options that could be available on the trade block at third. The White Sox could easily improve their lineup by adding a third baseman, but that would mean moving Moncada back to second. It is a difficult decision, but it is also one that the White Sox seem to have already made their minds up about.

The Chicago White Sox need to find a second baseman for the upcoming season. No matter what, Yoan Moncada is not considered to be an option.
