The Seattle Mariners have made an impressive start in their quest to upgrade the roster. They have landed Robbie Ray on a five year deal, hoping that he can be the ace they need as they attempt to return to the postseason. After months of pursuing his services, the Mariners were finally able to bring Adam Frazier to Seattle, adding more depth to the roster and possibly solidifying second base.
However, the Mariners are not done. Even with Ray heading the rotation, the Mariners are still looking to add at least one more starting pitcher as they seek to strengthen that unit.
Seattle Mariners not done addressing rotation
As it is, the Mariners have a strong trio atop the rotation with Ray, Chris Flexen, and Marco Gonzales. Logan Gilbert has plenty of potential, while Justin Dunn and Justus Sheffield have yet to find their footing in the majors. Even if the Mariners do not add another piece, the rotation could take a major step forward, especially if the young arms live up to their expectations.
Potential only goes so far. The Mariners cannot bank on Dunn and Sheffield finding their way next season while hoping to return to the postseason. Even if the Mariners add a middle of the rotation arm, getting that proven starter could make a major difference.
The issue is that there are not many difference makers left in free agency. Carlos Rodon and Clayton Kershaw remain on the market, but aside from that duo, the remaining pitchers are better suited for the back of the rotation at best. If the Mariners miss out on Rodon and Kershaw, it could be argued that they are better off with their in-house options.
A trade may be the best way for the Mariners to upgrade the rotation. The Reds have made Sonny Gray available, and the A’s are expected to commence their fire sale once transactions can begin again. As the Mariners have several pitchers that are close to major league ready, they may be able to land that needed arm via the trade market.
The Seattle Mariners are planning to add to their rotation once the lockout is over. It is just a matter of determining how they will be able to.
