The San Francisco Giants entered free agency with little money committed to the 2022 roster, but plenty of holes. They worked quickly to rebuild their rotation, adding three starters even as they lost Kevin Gausman to Toronto. However, the lineup still needs plenty of attention as well, especially in the wake of Buster Posey‘s surprise retirement.

With the Giants seemingly having plenty of money to spend, it would make sense that they would look to bring Kris Bryant back to the Bay Area. That does not seem as though it is destined to happen as the Giants are believed to be avoiding any free agents with a nine figure asking price.

Kris Bryant not returning to San Francisco Giants

This does not preclude the Giants from upgrading their roster. The likes of Seiya Suzuki, Michael Conforto, and Kyle Schwarber will not command that degree of financial compensation. Likewise, they could always look to make a trade, targeting players locked into affordable contracts for the next couple of seasons.

Those players are not in the same category as Bryant however. He has posted an impressive .278/.376/.504 batting line in his 3838 plate appearances, hitting 167 homers and 204 doubles. Bryant is a legitimate middle of the order bat, something that the Giants desperately need.

His defensive versatility would also make a dramatic difference. While he has seen most of his action at third and the corner outfield spots, Bryant can also play at first and in center. He can fill the void wherever he would be needed, making it much easier to optimize the lineup.

Bryant is going to find a home with ease once the lockout comes to an end. Several teams, notably the Blue Jays and Mariners, are reportedly pursuing him for their lineup. He is going to be an upgrade somewhere – it just will not be in San Francisco.

Kris Bryant will not be returning to the San Francisco Giants. Their reported disinterest in nine figure contracts will lead to his departure.
