The Cleveland Guardians had high hopes for Andres Melendez when he was acquired from the Brewers. Viewed as a strong defensive catcher, Melendez had the potential to develop into the type of backstop that the Guardians have tended to prefer over the years. At 20 years old, and having finished his first year of full season ball, he appeared to have plenty of potential.

Sadly, his career has been cut short. The Guardians announced on Thursday that Melendez had passed suddenly in Miami, Florida.

At this point, there are few details as to what happened. The cause of death has yet to be released, but it would is doubtful that he was suffering from an illness at the time of his passing.

Melendez had spent the entire 2021 season with the Low-A Lynchburg Hillcats. He produced a solid .247/.367/.431 batting line in his 289 plate appearances, hitting eight homers and 16 doubles. Although he struck out 80 times, Melendez had also drawn 44 walks, showing solid patience at the plate.

While he performed reasonably well with the bat, it was Melendez’s defense that was going to carry him through the minors. He had soft hands and excellent agility behind the plate that, when coupled with his strong arm, made him the type of backstop that could have vied for a Gold Glove in the future. Add in his ability to handle a pitching staff, and he was someone that could have had a long career as a glove first backstop if the offense did not continue to improve.

Cleveland Guardians prospect Andres Melendez passed away suddenly on Thursday. Our thoughts go out to his friends and family.
