Minnesota Twins hoping to unlock Derek Fisher’s potential
Teams may not be able to sign players to major league contracts, but that has not kept some intriguing names from being signed. Several former top prospects have landed with new teams, hoping to turn their careers around and live up to their potential. The Minnesota Twins have joined those teams in adding a former top prospect as well.
Derek Fisher was once a top prospect for the Astros. He will now attempt to turn his career around in Minnesota, having signed a minor league contract.
Minnesota Twins taking chance on Derek Fisher
Fisher had become an intriguing prospect due to his impressive tools. His combination of power and speed made him the type of player that the Astros could seemingly build around, someone who would be part of the next wave of talent in Houston. He did nothing to discourage those thoughts on his way through the minors as he showed that potential.
He seemingly has nothing left to prove at Triple-A. Fisher has produced a .283/.371/.504 batting line in his 1138 plate appearances, hitting 51 homers and 60 doubles while stealing 40 bases. He has been a star in the minors.
That has not been the case in the majors. Fisher has struggled to a .195/.285/.378 batting line in his 466 plate appearances. While he has hit 17 homers and drawn 50 walks, he has also struck out 165 times. He just has not made enough contact for his power to manifest at the major league level.
The Twins outfield may be a difficult one for Fisher to crack. However, Alex Kirilloff is coming back from injury and Trevor Larnach struggled after an impressive start to his major league career. If Minnesota does not think that at least one of that duo are ready, Fisher could make the roster as a fourth outfielder, especially if he shows an improved ability to make contact in spring training.
The Minnesota Twins are hoping that they can get something out of Derek Fisher. The former top prospect may not have many chances left.
