Amir Garrett had been quiet on Twitter lately. The Cincinnati Reds reliever had been a consistent presence on social media, making his sudden disappearance all the more peculiar. One had to imagine there was a reason behind it, either personal or dictated by the team.

It turns out that Garrett’s reasons were personal. On Wednesday, he returned to Twitter to explain his absence from the site.

Cincinnati Reds reliever Amir Garrett reveals threats received on Twitter

Garrett can certainly get under the skin of opposing teams and their fanbase. His antics on the mound, and his actions on the diamond, can cause a great deal of annoyance. At the same time, he is also the type of player that one would love to have on their team – someone who wears his heart on his sleeve and is not afraid to show emotion on the mound.

While Garrett can get under people’s skin, that does not give them free rein to send such disgusting messages. Anonymous keyboard warriors that would be begging for an autograph if they saw him in person feel as though they can say anything they want because they are hidden behind a computer screen.

As Garrett said, these players are human beings as well. At times that gets forgotten as they are viewed in the context of their performance and actions on the diamond. Fans agonize over every pitch, feeling that gives them the right to say whatever they want.

That is not the case. While the players may deal with boos and taunts at the ballpark, threats such as those Garrett received against his family are far too much. There is no place for such behavior whatsoever.

Cincinnati Reds reliever Amir Garrett took some time away from Twitter. The reason – continued threats against his family in his DMs.
