Is this the move New York Yankees fans want for a late Christmas present?

Santa Claus has come and gone and fans of the New York Yankees likely still feel like they haven’t received the present they really want. That comes, in part, thanks to the grinches who stole the Major League Baseball offseason out from under all of us and put any MLB player signings or trades in a deep freeze with a lockout.

The Christmas present that New York Yankees fans really want this year is Oakland A’s first baseman Matt Olson

Before the lockout commenced, the New York Yankees did very little to improve their roster heading into the 2022 season. The lack of moves weren’t a complete surprise as the Yankees certainly weren’t the only team who was quiet before the transaction break commenced.

However, with the Christmas presents now unwrapped, Yankees fans are feeling like there is still plenty more for their team to unwrap after the lockout ends and the transaction freeze is over.

Tops on the Christmas (or any other day) wish list for Yankees fans is current Oakland A’s first baseman Matt Olson. It’s already been said that the A’s are looking to potentially move Olson and other members of the roster as part of a franchise facelift. However, it’s also been said that the A’s won’t just give away Olson, coming off a campaign where the 27-year-old slashed a career-best .271/.371/.540 and recorded 39 home runs and 111 RBI.

Another important thing to note about Olson is that he will still have two years of team control left on his contract, meaning if the Yankees (or any other team, for that matter) acquires him, they will be assured to have him as a part of their roster through the 2023 campaign.

First base is a position where the Yankees need to find consistency in 2022. The team saw six players start 10 or more games at the position at 2021 and saw disappointing results, with those at the position posting a combined .219/.309/.376 slash line. Olson would certainly bring improved offense and consistency, and that would be, borrowing a line from Cousin Eddie, the gift that keeps on giving the whole year long for Yankees fans.
