There are numerous teams still searching for a center fielder, but precious few options are available. The best player at the position in free agency, Starling Marte, signed with the Mets, as did the possible second best option in Mark Canha. That leaves the trade market as the only real option for an impact player.

However, there is a potentially solid option in free agency that no one is talking about. Former Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones is back on the market after finishing his two year contract with the Orix Buffaloes.

Jones is not going to be a long term solution for a team in need of a center fielder. He has already turned 36 years old, his days as an All Star far behind him. However, he may be the best option available in free agency even though he is not being discussed.

His time in Japan did not go as well as anyone would have hoped. Jones produced a .250/.3334/.390 batting line in his 518 plate appearances, hitting 16 homers and 16 doubles. However, he did provide a memorable moment in being known as “Mr. Thanksgiving,” belting a go ahead homer in Game Five of the Japan Series on American Thanksgiving to help the Buffaloes stay alive for another day.

He does possess a solid major league resume. A five time All Star and four time Gold Glove winner, he has produced a lifetime .277/.317/.454 batting line, hitting 282 homers and 336 doubles. He is close to two major milestones – 300 homers and 2000 hits, both of which may be reached with a full season in the majors.

If he is healthy, Jones could be a relatively useful part of the lineup at little cost. His best days may be behind him, but he still has enough pop in the bat to be a viable option. Add in his veteran leadership, and Jones could be a strong mentor on a young team looking to get back to being a winning ballclub.

There are still plenty of teams looking for a center fielder. Former Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones might be worth a look.
